Industrial hemp: the crop that cuts the carbon footprint

While much of the climate debate focuses on cutting emissions, a fast-growing plant is drawing researchers' attention for doing the opposite: pulling carbon out of the atmosphere at scale. A carbon sink faster than the forest

Estimates from University of Cambridge researchers indicate that industrial hemp absorbs, on average, between 8 and 15 tonnes of CO₂ per hectare over its growing cycle. For comparison, forests typically capture 2 to 6 tonnes per hectare per year, depending on climate, age and tree type. The difference is speed: hemp reaches maturity in about 100 to 120 days, building biomass — nearly half of which is carbon — in a single harvest.

The carbon that doesn't return to the atmosphere

Unlike a crop that rots and releases CO₂ back into the air, part of the carbon captured by hemp stays locked in fibers turned into long-lasting products — construction materials like hempcrete, textiles, paper and biocomposites that replace plastic and fiberglass. Because it needs little fertilizer and, in most cases, no pesticides, the hemp cycle tends to be carbon-negative: it removes more CO₂ than it emits across planting, harvesting and transport.
